How to Calculate Real Savings on Swiggy & Zomato Orders (Fees and Taxes Explained)
By Himanshu · Founder, Crazy Looter · Updated
"You saved ₹209!" is not always what it seems. How delivery, platform and packaging fees work, and a simple way to work out what an offer really saves you.
Food delivery apps love a big savings number. At checkout you'll often see something like "You saved ₹209 on this order", but that figure can include things that were never real savings. This guide explains every line on a food delivery bill and gives you a simple way to judge whether an offer is actually good.
A real example of misleading "savings"
On a Burger Singh late-night order on Swiggy, two shakes with a listed item value of ₹198 came to a final bill of ₹43. The bill screen showed ₹209 in total savings, which is more than the food was worth. That's because the app counted waived fees as savings too. See the Burger Singh deal breakdown.
The order was still a great deal. But the honest saving is the item value minus what you paid: ₹198 − ₹43 = ₹155.
Every line on a food delivery bill
- Item total. The menu price of what you ordered. Some restaurants list higher prices on apps than in the restaurant.
- Item discount. The offer or coupon applied to your food.
- Delivery fee. It can change with distance, demand and your membership.
- Platform fee. A small fixed charge many apps add to every order.
- Packaging charge. Set by the restaurant, often per item.
- Small-cart or surge fee. Added to small orders or during busy periods.
- Taxes. GST on food and on some fees.
- Tip. Optional, and not part of the order's cost.
The simple formula
Real saving = item total (listed prices) − final amount paid.
The final amount is what actually leaves your account, including every fee and tax but not a voluntary tip. Ignore the app's "you saved" figure until you've done this sum.
You can also judge an offer by its effective price per item: the final amount divided by the number of items. Three kulfis for a ₹23 total, as in the Swiggy late-night kulfi deal, works out to under ₹8 each, which is clearly a strong offer.
Why waived fees aren't the same as savings
If a delivery fee of ₹40 is waived, the app may count it as ₹40 "saved". But you only save that money if you'd otherwise have paid it. If you'd normally pick up the food or have a membership that waives delivery anyway, that ₹40 was never a cost to you. Count waived fees as savings only when they'd really have applied.
How to compare two offers
- Build the same order in both apps, or with both offers.
- Go to the final bill screen in each one.
- Compare the final payable amounts, not the discount percentages.
- Check the conditions: minimum order value, specific restaurants, time windows.
Watch out for
- Minimum order traps. An offer that needs a ₹299 order isn't a saving if you only wanted ₹150 of food.
- Inflated app prices. Compare with the restaurant's own menu where you can.
- Coupons that disappear at checkout. Always confirm the discount still shows on the final screen.
- Time-limited offers. Late-night and event offers only apply during their window. See the Swiggy late-night offers guide.
Food delivery savings FAQs
Is the "You saved" number on Swiggy or Zomato wrong?
It isn't wrong, but it often includes waived fees and discounts on prices that were already high. Use item total minus final amount paid instead.
Should I count a free delivery as a saving?
Only if you'd otherwise have paid that delivery fee.
Do taxes apply after the discount?
Generally, tax is calculated on the amount after discounts, but the bill screen shows the exact figure, so check it there.
What's a good discount on food delivery?
There's no fixed number, but comparing the final amount with the restaurant's own menu price is the most honest test.
