Is a Paid Membership Worth It? How to Decide (Times Prime, Swiggy One and More)

By Himanshu · Founder, Crazy Looter · Updated

Memberships like Times Prime and Swiggy One promise big savings, but only if you use them. A simple break-even method to decide before you pay.

Paid memberships are everywhere: Times Prime, Swiggy One, Zomato's membership, shopping memberships and more. Each one promises savings far bigger than its price. Sometimes that's true. Often people pay for a membership and use one benefit. This guide gives you a simple way to decide whether a membership is worth it for you, using real Crazy Looter deals as examples.

Real examples of membership benefits

  • Pizza Hut dine-in: a Times Prime coupon of ₹400 off a ₹1,000 bill, stacked with a discounted gift voucher, turned a ₹1,000 bill into a ₹550 total. See the Pizza Hut deal.
  • WeWork day pass: a free coworking day pass booked through Times Prime benefits. See the WeWork deal.
  • Movie tickets: a Swiggy One Cinépolis coupon helped bring a ₹410 ticket down to ₹173. See the Cinépolis deal.

These deals look excellent, but none of them includes the membership's own price. That's the part most people forget.

The break-even method

  1. Write down the membership price for the period you're paying for, for example a year.
  2. List only the benefits you'll actually use, not every benefit the app advertises.
  3. Estimate realistic savings for each one over that same period. Be honest about how often you'll use it.
  4. Add them up and compare.

Worth it if: realistic savings over the period > membership price.

The gap between the two is your real gain. If it's small, a single missed month can wipe it out.

A worked example

Say a membership costs a certain amount per year, and you'll realistically use two benefits:

  • A dine-in coupon saving ₹400, used twice a year = ₹800.
  • Free deliveries saving about ₹30 each, on two orders a month = about ₹720 a year.

That's roughly ₹1,520 of realistic savings. If the membership costs less than that, it pays for itself. If it costs more, it doesn't, however good each benefit sounds. Always use the current membership price shown in the app, because prices and benefits change.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Will I use it in the first month? If not, you probably won't use it at all.
  • Do the benefits work in my city? Many restaurant and experience benefits are limited to certain cities and outlets.
  • Can benefits be combined? Some coupons can't be stacked with other offers. The Pizza Hut deal only worked because the outlet accepted both.
  • Does it auto-renew? Note the renewal date and set a reminder.
  • Is there a free trial or a cheaper short plan? Try a month before paying for a year.

When a membership is usually worth it

  • You already spend regularly in the category it covers, like ordering food every week.
  • There are one or two benefits you'd use often, not ten you'd use once.
  • The benefits work at places you actually go.

When to skip it

  • You're buying it for one deal. Work out whether that single deal saves more than the membership costs.
  • The benefits mostly cover things you wouldn't buy anyway.
  • You already have another membership covering the same things.

Membership FAQs

Is Times Prime worth it?
It depends entirely on which benefits you'll use and how often. Use the break-even method above with the current price in the app.

Is Swiggy One worth it?
If you order food or groceries often enough that delivery fees and member-only offers add up to more than the membership price, yes. If you order rarely, probably not.

Should I count a membership's price in a deal's savings?
Yes, if you bought the membership mainly for that deal. Crazy Looter deal pages note when a membership is required and that its cost isn't included.

Can I get a refund if I don't use a membership?
That depends on each provider's terms. Check them before buying.

What's the safest way to try one?
Start with the shortest plan or a free trial, and track what you actually save in the first month.

See the Times Prime coupon stacking guide for how combining offers works.
